Ghost in the Shell Wiki

Fukami (深見) is a police officer and a character in Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. A former associate and a close friend to Togusa, Fukami is one of the main investigators in The Laughing Man case, which had first started in 2024. Although he plays a supporting role through the first season, Fukami is a hidden anti-villain.

Background[]

Before Togusa joined Section 9, Fukami was his partner and both worked together closely. However, Fukami distanced from Togusa to investigate the Laughing Man conspiracy. The conspiracy wanted to expose the government's corruption in selling Serano Genomics' defective vaccines. These vaccines were meant to be sold in mass in order to stimulate the local economy. Fukami went deep in the conspiracy with his leads, but they were eventually cut short by The Laughing Man's sudden disappearance.

History[]

The Laughing Man Arc[]

During The Laughing Man's return in 2030, Fukami tips Togusa and sends him on the first gig. This renewal of the investigation would later become the main course of events through the season. While Togusa goes with Section 9 to unveil the truth about the conspiracy, Fukami secretly leads a gig on his own. To help Section 9 and foil the government, Fukami uses his plotting skills and inspires Serano Genomics programmer Nanao Ei to take the mantle, at the point where the latter believes himself to be the real Laughing Man. Fukami sneaks to Nanao Ei's hideout and kills him. Later, Togusa finds Nanao Ei's corpse and deems he is not the real suspect, whereas the government dismiss the case yet again.

Section 9, led by Motoko and Aramaki, continue to lead their investigation in the dark until the government notices it. Still, Section 9, with the help of the current Laughing Man, are able to survive against the government's hit-squad, the Umibozu. Motoko and Togusa end up revealing the truth about the conspiracy and the government is impeached and removed. Meanwhile, Fukami, who has fallen from his former grace as a government police officer, murders Mr. Serano, the owner of Serano Genomics and the creator of the defective vaccine.

In the end, The Laughing Man is revealed to be a product of people sharing the same intentions who were united by an unknown individual. Although Aoi takes the current mantle, numerous hints and clues imply that Fukami is the original Laughing Man. Firstly, Fukami is a police officer, but has highly classified information and gave them to Togusa. Secondly, He is also the only person who could have used Nanao Ei, due to his former connection to Serano. Thirdly, Fukami's assassination of Mr. Serano served no purpose, if not an inner desire to redeem his failure in solving the case in the past, then selling himself to the government.

Legacy[]

Fukami's actions have directly inspired library employee and student Aoi, who took up the mantle as The Laughing Man and managed to reveal the truth with Section 9, making it the first Stand Alone Complex. Aoi's deeds and role in making a Stand Alone Complex would later be compared to Kazundo Gouda, the head of the Cabinet Intelligence Service, and the cyborg revolutionary Hideo Kuze.

Personality and traits[]

Fukami is a typical good-natured co-worker. He is helpful, professional and courteous. He also seems to be good company, as Togusa considered him a friend. However, Fukami is secretly driven by the greater good of his country and its people; upon learning of the government's corruption, he sacrificed arm and limb in order to divulge their crimes. However, his limited knowledge in medicine prevented him from succeeding his goal. It can be assumed Fukami became a bitter man then, since he killed Mr. Serano out of self-righteousness.

Etymology[]

  • The surname Fukami means "deep" (深) (fuka) and "see, hopes, chances, idea, opinion, look at, visible" (見) (mi).
