The Ministry of Home Affairs (自治省 Jichishō), also called the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Interior Ministry, is a ministry of the government of Japan in the Ghost in the Shell universe. It oversees policing, internal security, and immigration, among other duties. Public Security Section 9 and Public Security Section 1 both operate under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Home Affairs as divisions of the Public Security Bureau. The head of the ministry is a cabinet-level position.
- Despite the Ministry of Home Affairs' similarity in name to the real life Ministry of Home Affairs (defunct) and Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, the entity portrayed in the Ghost in the Shell franchise is purely fictitious. Shirow Masamune based it on the British Home Office because Japan lacked an equivalent ministry for its police; instead, Japan's police are managed by the five-person National Public Safety Commission, the chairperson of which is a Cabinet minister.
