Nanao Ei, alternatively "Nanao A", is a former Serano Genomics programmer, a suspect in the case of The Laughing Man and a minor, but important antagonist in Ghost in The Shell: Stand Alone Complex. In his youth, Ei was a member of various left-wing parties. He was used as a scapegoat and killed by Fukami.
Background[]
Nanao Ei is the son of a police officer. When he was young, Ei joined "The Green Tower", a faction of the Human Liberation Front, after entering College. The Green Tower were affiliated with the New World Brigade, a powerful left-wing group at the time. Ei's extremists views led to armed conflicts, and an arrest record was handed to him eventually.
Once he was released from jail, Nanao EI hid his entire history as an activist and reluctantly joined Serano Genomics as agent programmer. When a tip to the company exposed his past, Nanao Ei was let go. He then engaged into suspicious activities, which led him to become a suspect in Section 9's investigation about The Laughing Man.
History[]
Nanao Ei hears about The Laughing Man meme phenomenon and pretends to be the originator. However, during Ei's charade, security officer Fukami stalks Ei to his lair. Fukami tells Ei that people will remember him in the history books and shoots him in the head. Ei is later found by Batou, who notes that the former activist died with a big smile of triumph.

Nanao Ei becomes one of the many scapegoats and doppelgangers of the true Laughing Man.
Appearance[]
Nanao Ei is a tall and has a slender figure. He has brown hair slicked backwards, wears round glasses and a loose white shirt with a blue tie. He possesses communication prosthetics on his temples.
Personality and traits[]
Nanao Ei is an arrogant, self-righteous hacker who believes he is superior than others. He has a god-complex and thinks of himself as the real Laughing Man. His arrogance is further noted in death as his corpse is plastered with a proud and wide smile.
